The Danube and its Tributaries
The painting was conceived as a pendant to Father Rhine. The Danube is depicted as a young woman wearing a wreath of oak leaves and a gold crown. Her robe is decorated with the coats of arms of the states through which the river flowed: the grand duchy of Baden, the kingdoms of Württemberg and Bavaria, and the Austro-Hungarian empire.
