Hermits in a Grotto (Love Renounced)
Schwind painted and drew many variations on the subject of the hermit. As an outsider who withdraws from society and its pressures, the hermit served to symbolise the existence led by artists. The three hermits in this picture are engaged in different activities, which may be interpreted as representing the realms of art, learning and nature.
