The Maiden (Love Unapproachable)
The four large paintings in this room are connected loosely by their subjects. Schwind called them `love pictures¿. He was prompted to paint The Maiden by Schiller¿s poem `Berglied¿ (Mountain Song) and its final lines: `Es sizt die Königin hoch und klar / Auf unvergänglichem Throne, / Die Stirn umkränzt sie sich wunderbar / Mit diamantener Krone. / Drauf schießt die Sonne die Pfeile von Licht, / Sie vergolden sie nur und erwärmen sie nicht¿ (The queen sits high and clear, her brow miraculously encircled with a diamond crown. The sun shoots arrows of light at her; they gild but do not warm her).
