Children Bathing
Feuerbach admired Rubens’s depictions of children, which showed how even the smallest paintings could achieve a monumental effect. This picture draws on imagery relating to the cults of Dionysus and Bacchus in classical mythology. Feuerbach painted a number of similar pictures featuring putti or children, their carefree play in natural surroundings embodying a yearning for humanity to be at one with creation.
