The Garden of Ariosto
Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533) achieved immortality with his epic poem Orlando furioso. A member of the court of Alfonso d’Este in Ferrara, he is here shown amid a gathering of festively attired men and women absorbed in artistic and musical pursuits. Such an idealised image of Renaissance life reflects Feuerbach’s ideas about the acclaim and status due to artists in modern society.
