Feuerbach worked for more than three years on this ambitious composition featuring life-size figures. Instead of illustrating a specific moment in Christ’s Passion as described in the gospels, he chose to fashion an emotionally compelling image of a mother mourning her dead son from a combination of pictorial elements associated with the Lamentation, the Entombment and the Holy Women at the Sepulchre.
