Self-portrait
Lenbach acquired a reputation in the 1870s for portraits evoking earlier styles. This self-portrait of 1866 heralds this development, recalling artists’ portraits of the Baroque era, notably Rembrandt’s. Producing copies of Old Masters for Schack had acquainted Lenbach with portraits by Titian, Rubens and Velázquez, all of whom influenced his own portraiture.
