Count Adolf Friedrich von Schack
Lenbach painted a number of portraits of Schack. In this example he uses a pensive, far-away expression, with the head resting on the hand, to characterise a man with intellectual and artistic interests. The suggestion of an open landscape in the background underscores the relaxed mood. Schack adopted more formal poses in other portraits, which show him wearing various medals and reflect his status as a baron and, from 1876, a count.
