Pietro Aretino (Copy of a painting by Titian (1485/90–1576), 1545, in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence)
Lenbach was attracted to Titian’s portrait of his friend the writer and satirist Pietro Aretino (1492–1556) by the ‘surprisingly vivid conception and brilliant handling’. Copying pictures like this, Lenbach acquired stylistic skills that he subsequently employed with great success in his own portraits.
