Portrait of a Young Man (The Young Englishman) (Copy of a painting by Titian (1485/90–1576), c. 1540–45, in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence)
The original painting is one of Titian’s finest portraits. With sparing artistic means, the artist grants the sitter compelling physical presence as he looks at the viewer with an alert gaze. In Schack’s words: ‘The great artist has granted immortality on earth to a man whose mantle of dust has been rotting for such a long time in the grave that no other memory of him survives among his fellow mortals.’
