Turks in a Coffee House
Turkish subjects fascinated Spitzweg, although he never set foot in the eastern Mediterranean region. He did see people of Eastern origin in Venice and in 1851 in London, when visiting The Great Exhibition. The studies he made there formed the basis of paintings like this. Spitzweg sold the picture in 1863 to Schack, who travelled widely in Turkey and the Middle East and was an expert on more than one Oriental culture.
