Shepherdess
Despite the young shepherdess’s modern dress, the scene is suffused with the pastoral spirit of classical antiquity. Böcklin was fond of the Idylls written by the Greek poet Theocritus around 270 BC, which describe the physical and emotional life of shepherds in natural surroundings.
