Triton and Nereid
Böcklin here places figures from classical mythology in surroundings evoking primordial nature. While the savage Triton blows into his conch-shell horn, the Nereid turns lovingly towards a huge sea serpent. Schack described the effect: ‘A fierce joy dominates the scene; it is as though one can hear the roaring and whistling of the spirit of Nature, the exultant cries of the spirits of the elements in their battle with the raging forces of the sea and air.’
