Florentine Painting Collection

Florentine Painting – Alte Pinakothek
The paintings of the 14th to 16th century

With the Florentine paintings at the Alte Pinakothek, the catalogue presents one of the internationally most prominent collections of paintings from the heart of the Renaissance. For the first time, the approximately 80 works, including panels by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Filippo Lippi, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Sarto, were thoroughly surveyed from an art historical and technological perspective.

The catalogue texts present new insights on attribution, provenance, iconography, history of genre and function. Analyses of the materials and painting techniques sound out the artists’ working methods and provide a better understanding of the coherences between technical and stylistic developments. Four introductory essays are dedicated to the specific characteristics of Florentine painting in the light of the current research.

The opulent inventory catalogue presents the results of an interdisciplinary research project of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Doerner Institut, which was generously funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.

Exhibition „FLORENCE AND ITS PAINTERS FROM GIOTTO TO LEONARDO DA VINCI“

OPENING | 17 OCTOBER 2018, 07 P.M.
DURATION OF EXHIBITION | 18 OCTOBER 2018 – 27 JANUARY 2019

With about one hundred masterpieces of the 14th and 15th century, the exhibition took a look at the groundbreaking innovations that occurred in painting in the birthplace of the Renaissance. For the first time in the history of the Alte Pinakothek, an accompanying display in the gallery featured nearly every single Florentine panel dating from the 14th, 15th, and 16th century held in the Munich collections. Furthermore, the exhibition also presents the results of an interdisciplinary research project undertaken at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen that uncovers and highlights the working methods and technical achievements of the Florentine masters.
