Open Access Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen
From May 2019 onwards, we are offering a new opportunity to access our collections with “Open Access Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen”. Inasmuch as all our collection holdings have been available via our Online Collection since 2017, we now also want to provide access to academic publications and institutional documents – free to use for private purposes, research, teaching and study.
For the time being, our index books and inventory catalogues have been made available as PDF digital copies – for the long term, the integration of these digital copies into our online collection is planned.
The Accession Books of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen
As of May 2019, we are providing access to the accession books of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections) through our website, in particular to enable us to detect art in our holdings that has been looted by Nazis. This is part of a comprehensive effort to ensure transparency in all matters relating to any unlawfully acquired works of art, such as those expropriated from Jewish owners that have either been directly placed in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen or that have been deposited in the hands of the Free State of Bavaria and from there transferred to us.
These inventory books record which works of art became part of the collection during the particularly relevant period from 1933 to 1945, and from where they came. With the help of these digital records you can track suspicious cases in the holdings of the State Painting Collections from anywhere in the world, as well as trace the history of the collection. Those inventories of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, which cover the years 1933 to 1945, contain detailed information on the purchase and acquisition of works of art. Of course, not every entry during this period (be it purchase, donation, bequest, exchange, etc.) can be placed in the context of Nazi persecution, but the aim is to find out when this is the case. For this task, we of course also hope for the critical and constructive participation of our users. For data protection reasons, a few sections in the books had to be blackened. Four Decades of Inventory Catalogues Online – Freely Available to Read, Browse and Download
The digitized catalogues of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen contain the most up-to-date and detailed information on the collections of the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, the Schack Collection and all branch galleries from 1960 to 2002, compiled by leading art historians worldwide.
For the first time, these PDF digital copies, fully indexed using the OCR [Optical Character Recognition] text recognition system, offer unrestricted access to the publicly available holdings of the Bavarian State Painting Collections to interested laymen and scholars worldwide, thus enabling comprehensive opportunities for research into areas such as provenance research.
Supplementing the Online Collection, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen thus would like to foster the research, study and appreciation of art for everyone.
