The Tempest (La tempesta) (Copy of a painting by Giorgione (1477/78–1510), c. 1506–08, in the Accademia, Venice)
The painting is one of the poesie painted by Giorgione and the young Titian. In these works the artists played skilfully on literary or philosophical themes without permitting the subjects to be pinned down exactly. Schack saw this as a salient feature of The Tempest: ‘It may be difficult to say what it actually depicts, and perhaps it is better not to attempt an interpretation, since its attraction lies precisely in this enigmatic, mysterious quality.’
