Rock in the Aegean Sea
This image, painted on cardboard, shows seaside rocks of the kind Rottmann depicted in a view of the Apollo temple on the island of Aegina and in other pictures. The setting sun floods the landscape with a melancholy glow. The gulf between Greek civilisation of the distant past and the disillusioning reality of the present is almost tangible.
