Greek Coast in a Storm
This is probably one of the free variations on Greek landscapes that Rottmann produced in his final years on the basis of studies he had made for a cycle of paintings of Greece in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. The location cannot be precisely identified. The lonely tree, its foliage tinged with the colours of autumn, and the herd of sheep huddled beneath the vast, stormy sky give compelling expression to the forces of nature.
