The Council of Gods (Sketch for the Medici Cylce)
Between 1621 and 1625 Rubens completed 24 monumental paintings (now in the Louvre), which depicted events from the life of Maria de Medici, wife King Henry IV of France who was murdered in 1610. The Alte Pinakothek is in possession of 16 of 25 extant sketches. The "Landing in Marseilles" (November 3, 1600) shows the welcoming of the Queen by Francia (personification of France) and Massilia (Marseille).
