An Allegory (Copy of a painting by Titian (1485/90–1576), c. 1530–35, in the Louvre, Paris)
Titian’s painting was long considered an allegorical portrait of Alfonso d’Avalos (1502–1546), Marqués del Vasto, a general under Emperor Charles V who led the imperial army against French forces commanded by King Francis I. It is now thought to be an allegory of marriage, showing Mars and Venus accompanied by Vesta and Hymen, the goddess and god of marriage and the hearth.
