Nature in southern Italy was rich and fertile, yet harboured danger. A snake, for example, disrupts the idyllic atmosphere of this lush, exotic landscape, exciting fear and terror. This motif had already featured in landscapes painted by Nicolas Poussin in the seventeenth century.
