It was Koch who discovered the Sabine hills east of Rome as a subject for landscapes. Nature there, he said, had `a primordial character, of the kind one imagines when reading the Bible or Homer¿. For successive generations of German landscape painters the village of Olevano acquired almost mythical status. In these ancient-seeming surroundings farmers and artisans were shown working in harmony with nature.
