The Watering-place
Horses’ watering-places first appeared as a subject in art in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. The colour and lighting in this picture, however, betray the influence of contemporary French painting of the Barbizon school, while the carefully balanced composition and the statuesque repose of the figures and animals exude a serene timelessness reminiscent of the work of the Renaissance artist Giorgione.
