Maiden with a Straw Hat

Amerling painted the "Maiden with a Straw Hat" in 1835 after returing from a trip to the Netherlands. His strong interest in Rubens' painting, as well as in other Flemish masters, is apparent principally through the painting's overall coloration. The rosy, lustrous portrayal of the girl's face is reminiscent of the flesh-tone used by Rubens and Jakob Jordaens.

The very tapered arrangement of the painting, as well as the over-sized portrayal forms a direct confrontation for the viewer. The sideward pose and turned away face make it clear that this is not a typical portrait, but is closer to being a genre painting. The young girl is not really depicted as an individual personality, but rather as a typical young lady of the Viennese Biedermeier.

Friedrich von Amerling (1803 ‐ 1887)

Leben und Werk

Geboren am 14. April 1803 in Wien, gestorben am 14. Januar 1887 ebenda. Nach dem Studium an den Akademien in Wien und Prag ging Amerling 1827 nach England und Paris, wo er entscheidend durch Thomas Lawrence und Horace Vernet beeinflusst wurde. 1828 zurück in Wien, begann er zunächst als Historienmaler, bevor er 1832 mit einem Bildnis Kaiser Franz' I. seinen Ruhm als Porträtmaler begründete. Nachdem er 1833 in den Niederlanden Peter Paul Rubens studiert hatte, kam er auf der Rückreise mit der Düsseldorfer Akademie in Berührung. Zwischen 1841 und 1844 hielt sich der genau beobachtende, virtuose Porträtist der Wiener Gesellschaft für längere Zeit in Florenz und in Rom auf.
