Lamentation of Christ
Poussin has shifted the location of Christ's entombment (Mat. 27, 57-60) to an ancient burial ground. Joseph of Arimathaea provided the chamber tomb, which is depicted to the right. For the figural arrangement, the artist has reverted to the Renaissance-inspired triangular composition and has adapted it to the long format. The coloration is a fine example of Poussin's masterful hand.
