Polder Landscape during Thaw

Van der Meer captured an atmospherically intense mood in this picture: the depressed, but characteristic side of a landscape, shaped by the ever-present dampness of the soil and air. His winter landscape was the very first painting of the Hague School to be acquired by the Neue Pinakothek. This acquisition of a work by an artist, who was largely unknown at that time, sent out signals to the art world.
