Cows in a Polder Landscape (Summer Day)

Maris uses the unspectacular motif of grazing cows for this differentiated painting of light, It is one far removed from the characteristic toning technique of the Hague School. Rays of sun are reflected in the pools of the swampy landscape, allowing the shimmering surfaces to blend in with the mirrored blue of the sky. Against this background, the animals¿ bodies become loosely connected areas of colour that gain structure from the deft strokes of paint.

Leben und Werk

Geboren am 18. Februar 1844 in Den Haag, gestorben am 10. Oktober 1910 ebenda. Durch seine Malerbrüder Jacob und Matthijs in der Malerei angeleitet, bildete sich Willem weitgehend selbständig weiter. 1855 machte er die Bekanntschaft mit Anton Mauve, dessen weiche Malweise er sich aneignete. 1865 führte ihn eine Reise nach Deutschland. Willem Maris zählt zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der »Haager Schule«; in seinen heiter gestimmten Landschaften spielen stets Tiere eine besondere Rolle.
