Captain Philemon Pownall

As the first president of the Royal Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds promoted the development of a unified national school. It was to be based on the Grand Style, as explained by Reynolds in his well-known lectures titled Discourses on Art. Elevated in tone and subject matter, this style privileged idealisation over realism. A fine example in Reynolds's own principal field, portraiture, is this painting of a sea captain with its marine trappings.

Leben und Werk

Geboren am 16. Juli 1723 in Plympton (Devonshire), gestorben am 23. Februar 1792 in London. Nach seiner Ausbildung bei dem Maler Thomas Hudson war Reynolds bis 1749 selbständig in London tätig, bevor er für zwei Jahre nach Rom ging. 1768 führte ihn eine Reise nach Paris. Im selben Jahr wurde Reynolds Präsident der neu gegründeten Royal Academy in London. Über sein künstlerisches Schaffen hinaus erlangte Reynolds mit den kunsttheoretischen Äußerungen in seinen berühmten »Discourses« großen Einfluss, die zwischen 1769 und 1790 erschienen. In seinen Historienbildern Eklektizist, stellte sich der wichtige Gegenspieler Thomas Gainsboroughs als Bildnismaler in die Tradition Anthonis van Dycks, die er mit einer an den Niederländern orientierten Hell-Dunkel-Malerei verband.
