The Sacrifice of Isaac
Abraham was ordered by God to sacrifice his only son. However, in the last minute an angel appears to stop the deed, it having been a test of faith (1 Moses 22, 1-13). This painting is the work of one of Rembrandt's students, and was reworked by the master himself. "Rembrandt. verandert. En over geschildert" [Rembrandt altered and painted over (it)] - is stated on the lower edge of the painting. The first version (1635), done by Rembrandt himself, is in the State Hermitage Museum St. Petersburg.
