Beggar Boys Eating Grapes and Melon

All of Murillo's genre paintings are to be found outside of Spain, having been sold throughout Europe by art dealers already during the 17th century. The staged subjects are mostly of children and beggar children, placed in apparently every-day situations. What makes this Murillo painting so poignant is the mixture of idealization - there's no trace of hunger or illness - and naturalism, which renders the scene so true-to-life.

Leben und Werk

Spanischer Maler. Geboren 1617/18 in Sevilla. Seine erste Ausbildung erhielt er bei Juan de Castillo. Zwischen 1648-50 hielt er sich in Madrid auf, wo er die Werke von Rubens, Van Dyck und Veläzquez studierte, unter deren Einfluß sich sein reifer Stil und der späte "estilo vaporoso" ausbildete. 1660 gründete er als führender Meister Sevillas eine Malerakademie, zu deren erstem Präsidenten er gewählt wurde. Murillo beschäftigte zahlreiche Gehilfen und hatte viele Nachfolger. Er starb 1682 in Sevilla.
