Christ in the House of Mary and Martha
This painting was possibly donated by the Welser family for an altar in the Dominican church in Augsburg. The depiction, drawn from Luke 10, 38-42, shows Christ in the house of Mary and Martha in Bethany. Martha takes care of the guests, while her sister Mary listens attentively to the words of Christ - an often cited example for the "vita activa et contemplative" (active and contemplative life), a fundamental part of both ancient and medieval ethical teachings.
