Rachel Ruych's finely executed bouquet of flowers in the Alte Pinkothek, painted in 1715 and numbered among the artist's best works, is an example of Dutch still-life painting during its late apogee. This painting shows how the artist, with an amazing mastery of painterly skills, combines striking naturalness with elegant and highly-decorative stylization in a brilliantly realized, unified composition. In front of a dark background Ruysch has arranged a colorful bouquet that appears to reach out to the viewer. The various flowers, enlivened by insects and caterpillars, are harmoniously arranged around a central group of blooming roses, cistus and anemones, which are highlighted by gradations of light. A strong eye-catcher is the radiant white blossoms of the passion flower in the foreground.
Rachel Ruysch (1664 ‐ 1750)
Leben und Werk
Rachel Ruysch wurde 1664 als Tochter des berühmten Professors für Anatomie und Botanik, Frederik Ruysch, in Den Haag geboren. Der Vater übte als Amateur die Malerei und ebnete der Tochter den Weg zur Malkunst. Zwischen 1669 und 1683 lernte sie im Atelier des bekannten Amsterdamer Blumen- und Jagdbeutestilllebenmalers Willem van Aelst. 1693 heiratete Ruysch den Porträtisten Juriaen Pool. Beide wurden 1701 Mitglieder der Haager "Confrerie Pictura" und waren von 1708 bis 1716 Hofmaler des in Düsseldorf residierenden Kurfürsten Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz. Ihren Wohnsitz behielt das Paar jedoch stets in Amsterdam, wo die Malerin im Jahr 1750 verstarb.
