This panel was painted in connection with the new appointment and furnishing of the Neues Stift in Halle under Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg. It depicts the encounter between St. Maurice, leader of the Theban legion, and St. Erasmus. St. Maurice was the church¿s patron saint, as well as the patron saint of the Holy Roman Empire; St. Erasmus that of the royal house, from which Albrecht of Brandenburg stemmed. Erasmus is here portrayed with Albrecht¿s likeness. After the dissolution of the Neues Stift as a result of the Reformation, the painting, along with other artworks, was brought to Aschaffenburg.
