Four years after her marriage to Charles-Guillaume Le Normant d'Etioles in 1745, Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson became the mistress of Louis XV. Owing to her intellectual propensity, which impressed the king, she soon attained an elevated position at court: the climax of which was her being named on February 7, 1756 as the queen's lady-in-waiting (dame du palais). To commemorate the occasion a combination private and official portrait was painted by Boucher.

Leben und Werk
Französischer Maler, Zeichner und Kupferstecher. Geboren 1703 in Paris. Zuerst Schüler seines Vaters, des Kupferstechers Nicolas Boucher, danach Lehre bei dem "Premier peintre du Roi" François Lemoyne. Von 1727 bis 1730 weilte er in Italien. 1734 wurde er Mitglied, 1761 Rektor, 1765 Direktor der Königlichen Akademie in Paris und im gleichen Jahr "peintre du Roi". Gestorben 1770 in Paris.
