ROMAN ONDAK – MEASURING THE UNIVERSE

For the first time in 15 years, a performance by the artist Roman Ondak (*1966) can be experienced again, created especially for the Pinakothek der Moderne. The concept of "Measuring the Universe" is simple: the height of each individual visiting the museum is recorded on the wall - in the way parents mark the growth of their children to give them a sense of the dimension of time. An everyday, actually private action becomes the center of attention and is transformed into a public and collective action. During the exhibition period, a drawing is created on the wall that becomes increasingly dense and black. In the end, all visitors will be present at the same time, although they will all have left as well.
"Measuring the Universe" is a picture of our life in this world - a picture of the importance, but also insignificance of the individual human being in mass and time.

Under the title Collection+, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungene (Bavarian State Painting Collections) in the Pinakothek der Moderne will be presenting studio exhibitions within the context of the collection. Presentations of new acquisitions, loans and artist rooms reveal the laborious work involved in gathering, maintaining and researching the collections, shining a light on the scholarly investigations into them and their contemporary relevance.
