Nicholas Nixon: The Brown Sisters, 1975–2020

The studio exhibition is devoted to the unique long-term project THE BROWN SISTERS by the US-American photographer Nicholas Nixon (b. 1947). 
Every year since 1975, US photographer Nicholas Nixon has taken a group portrait of his wife and her three sisters. The series allows viewers to trace evolving ties and undercurrents between the siblings, as well as the changing fashions and the ageing process. The identical positioning of Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie gives rise to a sensitive portrait of time itself, in which the present constantly morphs into the past, but always with one eye on the future.  
This is the first museum showing of all 46 portraits from this series. The latest photograph represents an unexpected milestone within the series: it was taken in 2020 – the year of social distancing.

Under the title Collection+, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungene (Bavarian State Painting Collections) in the Pinakothek der Moderne will be presenting studio exhibitions within the context of the collection. Presentations of new acquisitions, loans and artist rooms reveal the laborious work involved in gathering, maintaining and researching the collections, shining a light on the scholarly investigations into them and their contemporary relevance.
