NEW SPACES: FROM GIBRALTAR TO HELIGOLAND

With renovation work completed, the Sammlung Schack’s 2nd-floor galleries are now open to the public once again. In a new hang, they present those parts of the collection that have been hidden from view in the last few years. Visitors are greeted with the gallery of Spanish landscapes, a core group of works in the collection. Fritz Bamberger and Eduard Gerhardt were among the few German artists to travel to the Iberian Peninsula in the 19th century and paint views of Toledo, Granada, and the Alhambra. In Count Schack they found an enthusiastic admirer of their works and a man widely admired in his day for his near-unrivalled knowledge of Spain, its literature and culture. On show are late Romantic landscapes of Italy by artists such as Ernst Willers and Bernhard Fries as well as Nordic landscapes, including a striking view of Heligoland by Christian Morgenstern. After the renovation of the ground-floor galleries in 2008 and the first-floor galleries in 2009, the reopening of the rooms on the second floor means that visitors finally have complete access again to all exhibition floors at the museum.
