JAN BRUEGHEL THE ELDER (1568-1625) THE NEUBURG SEASONS VISIT THE ALTE PINAKOTHEK

The paintings of Jan Brueghel the Elder are among the greatest treasures in the Alte Pinakothek. With masterpieces such as ‘Large Fish Market’, ‘Harbour Scene with Christ Preaching’ and ‘Madonna in Floral Wreath’ created together with Peter Paul Rubens, the museum boasts the most extensive holdings of his works in the world. Important paintings are also to be found in the State Gallery in Neuburg an der Donau. Due to building work, an exquisite selection of works from the Brueghel holdings found there are now being exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek. One highlight is ‘The Four Seasons’ series created together with Hendrik van Balen. Countless details, that are an invitation to make a closer inspection, capture the passing of the year. The endeavour to reflect the diversity of the world within the limitations of a copperplate is characteristic of the ‘Four Parts of the World’ series by Jan van Kessel the Elder. The work is among the public’s favourites in the Alte Pinakothek and is now on display once again.
