The human figure as one of the oldest motifs in art also plays an important role in photography. In the presentation COUNTERPART, the range of photographic portraiture over the past 100 years becomes clear in selected positions. The starting point is August Sander, who, as a pioneer of objective and conceptual photography, sought to capture people from the most diverse social classes and professions in a typological way. However, younger generations of photographers are approaching a different, consciously subjective reality. Wolfgang Tillmans, for example, is concerned with capturing an individual attitude to life in a portrait. Beat Streuli, on the other hand, draws an urban portrait of society from a distance using a situational photograph.

With works by Sibylle Bergemann, Terry Ewasiuk, Lee Friedlander, York der Knoefel, Judith Joy Ross, August Sander, Michael Schmidt, Beat Streuli, Wolfgang Tillmans and Ian Wallace.

Under the title Collection+, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungene (Bavarian State Painting Collections) in the Pinakothek der Moderne will be presenting studio exhibitions within the context of the collection. Presentations of new acquisitions, loans and artist rooms reveal the laborious work involved in gathering, maintaining and researching the collections, shining a light on the scholarly investigations into them and their contemporary relevance.
