BELLINZONA AND MORE … PAINTINGS AND OIL SKETCHES BY JOHANN CHRISTIAN ZIEGLER

Johann Christian Ziegler, born in 1803 in the north Bavarian town of Wunsiedel, was one of Germany’s early realistic landscape painters. After studying drawing in his home town he moved to Munich in 1821, where he studied landscape painting at the Kunstakademie. In 1828 and 1829 he travelled to northern Italy. Along with landscapes and genre paintings in the tradition of Wilhelm Kobell and Max Joseph Wagenbauer, Ziegler created drawings and oil sketches based on direct observations of nature. His untimely death in 1833 at the young age of 30 put an abrupt end to his promising career.
This one-room show at the Neue Pinakothek displays paintings and oil sketches that were presented to the museum by the artist’s descendants in 2014, along with drawings and sketchbooks, as a donation to the Museum Foundation for the Promotion of the State Museums of Bavaria. Works by Ziegler’s role models and contemporaries in Munich are also featured.
