Introduction
Numerous groups of friends and patrons support the activities of the Pinakothek museums. For example, the Pinakotheks-Verein, originally founded in 1953 to support the rebuilding of the Alte Pinakothek, today includes patronage of the Alte and Neue Pinakothek. The Pinakothek der Moderne is also generously supported by several patrons, such as the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne, which was established in 1994 to collect private donations for the construction of the Pinakothek der Moderne, and PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne, which was established in 1965 under the name “Galerie-Verein”.
The various groups of friends offer a full programme which provides an insightful look at the work that goes on at the Pinakothek museums. Previews of exhibitions, guided tours and lectures by museum staff, as well as special journeys and festivities offer a different view of the art world and opportunities for fascinating encounters.
Pinakotheks-Verein
The Pinakotheks-Verein (Association) is a non profit organisation with headquarters in Munich. Currently, it has around 400 members and patrons. The association supports the Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek in expanding their collections through the purchase of paintings and helps promote activities for visitors and those interested in the Pinakothek museums.
Originally, the association was founded to support the rebuilding of the Alte Pinakothek, which was destroyed during World War II. Once this goal was achieved, the articles of the association were changed to include patronage of the Alte and Neue Pinakothek and their collections.
The association’s programme regularly offers guided tours, events, lectures and small journeys for members and patrons. In addition, you will be invited to all the openings of new exhibitions as well as to private viewings.
Acquisitions
Since the 1960s, the Pinakotheks-Verein has acquired works for the Alte and Neue Pinakothek on a regular basis. These include paintings in particular, but also several sculptures such as Picasso’s “Head of a Jester” of 1905. The most recent acquisition was in 2008 when Willem Kalf’s “Still Life with Delft Jug” was bought for the Alte Pinakothek.

Membership
A museum remains vital only when it finds friends and patrons who feel personally allied to its goals and are prepared to commit themselves to the support of its collection. With a membership in the Pinakotheks-Verein you too can contribute to this goal. In view of the cuts in the state budget for museums, support through patrons is more important than ever before.
Two types of membership are available: ordinary or patron.
The annual membership fee is staggered accordingly.

Members under 35 years of age can apply for a reduction of the membership fee to 80 Euro. Membership and contributions are tax deductible.

1977 acquisited by the Pinakotheks-Verein
PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne e.V.
PIN. was founded in 1965 as the ‘Galerie-Verein’ (Gallery Association) and, since then, has acquired hundreds of artworks for the Sammlung Moderne Kunst and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung. Exceptional items that should be mentioned include Bacon’s Triptych, Beuys’ Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts (End of the 20th Century), and works by Nauman, Baselitz, Polke, Richter and Warhol. By virtue of their positions, the Director General of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Director of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung have been members of the Board of Directors since July 2006.
Today, PIN. provides support for the Sammlung Moderne Kunst and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung wherever acquisition-related decisions are to be made. PIN. strives to enable the much-needed continuity in collecting to be upheld. PIN. aims to give the museums flexibility, wants to encourage comparisons to be made between old and new forms of expression through acquisitions, as well as through lectures, trips and tours, and to prompt questions that put a new perspective on the works in the collections.

Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne
Founded in 1994, the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne has been inspired by the conviction that civil society permanently needs impulses for its own progress. The foundation initiated and spearheaded the financial support for the construction of the Pinakothek der Moderne with donations of 13 Mio. EUR. Since then the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne, which is independent in defining the use of its donations, supports the collections of the Pinakothek der Moderne especially in terms of the spatial and functional intermediation of art. Along these lines the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne took the initiative in 2009 to enhance a stronger vitalization of the Kunstareal München. Its goal is to amplify the access to the different collections, to increase their visibility and to promote their cooperation with each other.

International Patrons of the Pinakothek
The ‘International Patrons of the Pinakothek’ are a group of museum-affiliated patrons whose aim is to strengthen the national and international ties of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Pinakothek der Moderne. Active since 2006 in the USA and 2010 in Germany, the Patrons support museum acquisitions, exhibitions, research initiatives and publications, primarily in the sphere of postwar and contemporary art.
Since the group’s founding, the Patrons have secured the acquisition of important works by Fred Sandback, Dan Flavin, Philip Guston and Alex Katz, thereby making a considerable contribution to the Pinakothek’s collection of American art. Thanks to the Patrons’ support, large-scale retrospectives of Dan Flavin (2006) and Arnulf Rainer (2010) have been mounted, and paintings by Rainer and Willem de Kooning have made their way into the museum’s collection. In 2011, the Patrons underwrote the exhibition ‘John Chamberlain. Curvatureromance’ and the museum-spanning project ‘AMERICAN SUMMER.’ These projects were followed in 2012 by a Willem de Kooning colloquium and a benefit dinner with John Elderfield—the curator of a recent retrospective of de Kooning’s work at MoMA, New York. In addition to these activities, the Patrons also sponsored a discussion evening with the artist Richard Tuttle, an event which coincided with an exhibition of Tuttle’s works drawn entirely from private collections in Munich. In 2013, two catalogue raisonnés supported by the Patrons will appear, the first devoted to the Ryoanji-drawings of John Cage and the second to the prints of Al Taylor. Alongside these publishing projects, the Patrons are currently funding an 18-month joint research initiative between the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Harvard Art Museums, focusing on the multiples of Joseph Beuys.
The Patrons offer individuals and businesses in the United States the opportunity to support the Pinakothek der Moderne via donations in the form of artworks or financial gifts. Both of these are tax deductible under U.S. and German law. As a non-profit organization, the Patrons are also registered within the network of Transnational Giving Europe (TGE). This affiliation allows all donations originating within Europe to accrue tax benefits in the country from which they stem.

Theo Wormland-Stiftung
Outstanding works of classic Surrealist art that make up the heart of the Theo Wormland-Stiftung (Theo Wormland Foundation) and form one of the principal focal points at the Pinakothek der Moderne were handed over to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen on a permanent basis in 1982. Two rooms are given over to works by Max Ernst, René Magritte and Salvador Dali that deal with hidden human realities and the enigmatic order of things. These key works are complemented by a number of paintings and sculptures of New Figurative art from the post-World War II period which – although inspired by Surrealism –alienate reality in a magical way by other means. The Theo Wormland Foundation has also provided substantial support to our institition in a number of different areas, for example for important acquisitions and exhibitions, by funding academic grants for periods of several years, and with one of the most important donations that secured the initial funding for the construction of the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Fritz-Winter-Stiftung
In 1974 Fritz Winter presented a large part of his artistic estate to the Galerie-Verein München e. V. (today PIN.). The artist’s aim and condition was to create a non-profit making foundation for the works. The approval for the foundation was granted in 1981 under public civil law based in Munich. Care of 600 works was transferred to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen by the Galerie-Verein.
Fritz Winter defined the aim of the Foundation as being: »To promote science and research as well as art and culture by assisting talented young people in these fields.« Based on this intention, the Fritz Winter Prize has been awarded to outstanding scientists, scholars of the arts and artists since 1986. In addition, the works of art in the holdings provide a basis for exhibitions that explore the artist’s œuvre, present it in contrasting and complementary art historical contexts and highlight it in quality publications.

Freunde des Max Beckmann Archivs
The ‘Freunde des Max Beckmann Archivs’ have their roots in the ‘Max Beckmann Gesellschaft’, founded in 1953.
With 37 paintings by Beckmann, the Modern Art collection at the Pinakothek der Moderne now has the second largest collection of his paintings in the world. Founded in 1977, the Max Beckmann Archive is affiliated with the Bavarian State Painting Collections and, as a central research institution, has extensive document and photo collections on the artist and his work, as well as a comprehensive specialist library.
The Freunde des Max Beckmann Archivs support the Archive and promote the expansion of its existing holdings; they also provide funds for research, publications and restoration projects. The members of the association enjoy numerous benefits: in addition to being integrated into a lively, interdisciplinary circle of supporters, members also receive free admission to the Pinakothek museums and to the association’s events. These include readings, lectures, travel and joint visits to exhibitions.
